چکیده

The kinetics of uptake of gaseous N2O5 on submicron aerosols containing NaCl and natural sea salt have been investigated in a flow reactor as a function of relative humidity (RH ) in the range 30–80% at 295±2 K and a total pressure of 1 bar. The measured uptake coefficients, γ , were larger on the aerosols containing sea salt compared to those of pure NaCl, and in both cases increased with increasing RH . These observations are explained in terms of the variation in the size of the salt droplets, which leads to a limitation in the uptake rate into small particles. After correction for this effect the uptake coefficients are independent of relative humidity, and agree with those measured previously on larger droplets. A value of γ=0.025 is recommended for the reactive uptake coefficient for N2O5 on deliquesced sea salt droplets at 298 K and RH>40%.

The effect of varying levels of surfactant on the reactive uptake of N2O5 to aqueous aerosol

Recent observations have detected surface active organics in atmospheric aerosols. We have studied the reaction of N2O5 on aqueous natural seawater and NaCl aerosols as a function of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration to test the effect of varying levels of surfactant on gasaerosol reaction rates. SDS was chosen as a proxy for naturally occurring long chain monocarboxylic acid molecules...

Global modeling of nitrate and ammonium: Interaction of aerosols and tropospheric chemistry

[1] Global radiative forcing of nitrate and ammonium aerosols has mostly been estimated from aerosol concentrations calculated at thermodynamic equilibrium or using approximate treatments for their uptake by aerosols. In this study, a more accurate hybrid dynamical approach (HDYN) was used to simulate the uptake of nitrate and ammonium by aerosols and the interaction with tropospheric reactive ...

Sulfate Formation in Sea-Salt Aerosols: Constraints from Oxygen Isotopes

[1] We use observations of the mass-independent oxygen isotopic composition (DO) of sulfate in the marine boundary layer (MBL) to quantify the sulfate source from aqueous SO2 (S(IV)) oxidation by O3 in alkaline sea-salt aerosols. Oxidation by O3 imparts a large DO signature to the resulting sulfate (8.8%) relative to oxidation by H2O2 (0.9%) or by OH or O2 (0%). Ship data from two Indian Ocean ...

Heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on secondary organic aerosol surfaces: A possible source of nitrous acid (HONO) in the atmosphere?

The heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on different secondary organic aerosols (SOA) was investigated with the focus on a possible formation of nitrous acid (HONO). In one set of experiments different organic aerosols were produced in the reactions of O3 with α-pinene, limonene or catechol and OH radicals with toluene or limonene, respectively. The aerosols were sampled on filters and exposed to h...
